On a recent episode of Garage Squad, they were working on a 2 door 55 Chevy. They needed a new rear end and opted for one out of a late model Ford SUV, a couple of reasons they selected it was 1. It was a posi 2. Factory disc brakes. I considered a late model GM SUV or pickup axle but heard they were a couple inches wider?

My frame is from a 1972 GMC and has leaf springs, I did an axle flip on the stock axle, it’s not a posi and the ratio is pretty high.

Questions

1. What have you guys and or girls used?
2. Does anyone know if the width on the Ford SUV rear axle?
