Importance of crooked crossmember

I built my own small notch and boxed in the backside.
Well poor planning would lead to the crooked crossmember doesn't fit where it should. I see a lot of trucks without this all together.

What I'm trying to figure out is can I drill a new hole so it's straight across, drill a hole a quarter inch back so it's less of an angle, or should I shift both sides back so it's the same angle?

Any input is appreciated.
