Trouble getting u joint clips into slip yoke

TH350 and 1 piece driveshaft.

I've had trouble getting both clips in on the yoke with new U joints. As if the clips are too thick. I shaved one clip down to fit but I realized that the caps seem to be uneven now and I don't know if thats an issue. Here are two pics to show the unevenness that I'm talking about.

The yoke itself appears to have no abnormalities the caps by themselves will go through the holes completely so its not that the caps are being held up by something in the yoke. I've tried multiple u joints and have the same issue.

EDIT: From what I understand the u joint at the axle and at the transmission is the same, if this is incorrect then its quite likely that I just have the wrong U joint in there.
