Another HEI ?

I just put in a hei distributor. I left all the wires on the points cap so i wouldn't loose track of where each went, but now I'm looking at the big hei cap thinking it doesn't look the same at all. How do I know which wire goes where. I gather from the last post that the #1 is next to the tach. So are they all in line clockwise from there? If so, I can find the number one on the points cap and then go around clockwise and switch to the hei cap. Does that sound right?
Also, I put a mark on the firewall directly ahead or the rotor on the poins dist. I put another on the engine where it pointed when it came out. I used the mark on the engine to start the hei distributer down the hole right, and then set it into place. It seems to me that the rotor is off the mark on the firewall by about 15 degrees. The hei does sit lower than the points did, but am I off a tooth? How can I tell before I start it up?
