From my experience, GV units do have a firm shift. Not harsh, but definitely firm. Of course the firmness of the shift is also dependent upon the load going through it - light throttle, softer shift... hard/full throttle, firm shift.

No additional crossmember needed for your K2500 application. The unit simply bolts to the back of the T-Case. Here's a GV I installed on my K30 with a NP205.
