Where to mount early style bumper guards?

I have a used pair of bumper guards to put on my truck. I didn’t take them off the old truck so I have no idea of where they mount.

Has anyone ever seen mounting instructions for the early style bumper guards? I always thought that they went towards the center of the bumper covering up the 4 bolt heads that flank the license plate. The problem is here the curvature of the guards don’t match the curvature of the bumper very well. If they are mounted towards the ends of the bumper the curvature matches ok but it looks a little funny. Do they mount at the location of the outer bumper bracket bolts or do you have do drill a new hole for the one lower bolt that holds the guard on from behind?

I looked at the pictures on this site for clues. The only thing I saw were later style ones mounted so they flank the license plate.

Thanks for anything.

Tom
