Hood latch help needed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I purchased this hood release because of the authentic looking finish but the release lever is different and I don't know what the release is for. I installed it on my '72 3/4 ton truck and the release handle did not play nice with the egg-crate grille openings. Can anyone positively ID this part? Could be for a different year or possibly from a big truck???

The gray part is the mystery part and the black is the correct fitting latch.
