1968 C60 rear outside wheel bearing removal??

I am going to put new bearings in my 68 C60. I have removed the hub from the spindle. My question is, is it normal to have to remove the outer bearing through the back because it won't fit through the housing on the outside? I had to remove the grease seal in the back and then remove the inside bearing and race. Then I removed the large snap ring and drove out the outside bearing race and then removed the outside bearing through the back of the hub. Am I missing something here. The outside bearing won't fit through the outside of the hub where the gear teeth are that the axle fits into. Just doesn't seem right to me but I have never worked on anything other than smaller trucks. Thanks for your help in advance. I really appreciate it.
