Rear leaf question, why did they do this

My 67 k20 has the rear axle set back in the wheel well
I thought it may have the wrong springs on it
But in shopping for new ones I find that the lighter springs
Are 24" from front eye to ctr. Pin and the heavier springs are
26" to pin
This truck is 7500gvw
My question is why
and does someone sell heavy springs that Center the axle
Thanks in advance
