A 300 HP 350 should be OK with a 3.08 gear. Although not for a towing situation, especially heavy loads.
My 77 Trans Am (that I bough new...) came with a 2.41 gear. Of course it had a 400 engine, BUT has had a Pontiac 350 in it since 1992. It runs and drives JUST fine!!!
