Resistor on alternator exciter feed

How important and how many guys are using a resistor on the exciter feed wire on a stand alone LS application? 470 ohm? I converted the original alternator regulator with a regulator for a 2004 Silverado and it worked for 5 years and several thousand miles but went bad. Replacing it with a new one but wondering if I should add the resistor for longer life. Your thoughts.
