Bed angle Strips

My angle strips on my '61 step were pretty gnarled up so I bought new ones but I need to know how far down from top of bed are the strips. I used this picture from another thread as reference. I need top of bed rail to top of the flange. On that note, has anyone used the polished strips and how did you mount them? It would seem welding them would ruin the polish but bolting them would make the bolts visible on the outside and nuts exposed on inside. Rivet?
