NV4500 damper

I am looking at getting a NV4500 from a 1993 Chevy 2wd to put in my 1972 GMC to replace the SM465. The NV has a damper or such on the rear of it. Is that needed, can it be replaced with something else? Sounds like it is very hard to remove for a refresh.

And, has anyone ever used the stock shift knob on a NV4500 adding 5th to the knob? I'd rather have the factory knob over the NV knob. Thanks for the help.
