Please help with switching out tranny!

Hey guys--the 700R4 on my truck is shot, and I'm looking to find a used replacement until I can afford to have this one rebuilt. Anyways, a friend of mine told me I would need to measure the tailshaft of my tranny to see if the one he had would fit. Just wondering if someone could explain to me why this is important (drive shaft length??), and also what I would need to look at and measure on my truck and on the potential replacement tranny to make sure of a fit. It's 4x4, I don't know if that makes a difference or not. Thanks!
