Carb, Camshaft, and Timing

In the next month or so I'm gonna tear into my 305 V8 and get it running like new or better. I am buying a replacement carb, can i just get the Champion for $269 from Advance Auto Parts, or should i spring for the OE Rochester for $400? I don't plan on racing or dogging it, just driving. My timing is very bad also. The same time I replace my carb I plan on replacing my timing chain and gears. I guess i should chang timing set first since it requires taking almost eveything off the block? Or should i wait until i have a fresh carb on so it is more accurate? (gasps for air) My cousin said it is very possible my camshaft is worn also. I know THAT is hard to do since the cam is like in the block or on it or whatever. Any suggestions on that? Please follow my adventures with Ol' Red at my car domain site.
