Steering Column Advice

In my 71 C10 the previous owner installed a new tilt column and repo steering wheel. The problem is it seems too close to me when driving, maybe it's just the 17" steering wheel. Not sure but at times it feels like I'm back on the farm driving an old tractor. Is it possible to slide the column closer to the dash? Or would a smaller steering wheel make a difference?
