Locating core support

At some point in its history my 3600 took a hit to the front hard enough to damage the front cross member and apparently the core support. As seen in the attached pics the "repair" involved "welding" 1/2" plate on both the underside and upperside of the lower support member. (Not pretty but it worked.) To position the core support how far above the cross member should the core support sit (ignoring the 1/2" plate)? I know it eventually gets shimmed as needed to position the front clip and hood but as a starting point, what is the distance between the core support and the cross member? Got a new radiator coming and want to install and plumb it and run trans cooler lines.
