Later HEI question

On the later HEI with the flat 4 pin plug, did some one here say you are able to jump a wire or a couple wires and make it work with no computer?
I seem to remember 'ole Fast 68 saying something like that, but I do not remember the details.
Been helping a neighbor replace the crappy Turbo charged 301 in his 81 trans am and running a chevy 350 with a 700R4. It's a pretty cool car with the 4 wheel disc brakes (for those who enjoy replacing rear pads every 30,000 miles) and leaky T-tops.
Anyone interested in the left over 301 turbo motor? I can make you a good deal, tranny can go with it too.
