How do air shocks work or operate

On my 69 4 door Nova I am using 3" drop springs from Hotchkiss, and I am likely to add lowering spindles to get another inch. As the true drop has not been far enough for my taste. Currently it's only a 1/2" lower then when the original springs were there.

So to increase my cars weight carrying capacity in terms of weight before the tail drags everything. I want to add air shocks to the suspension off a braced section of the subframe.

So I will have 4 shocks in the rear. The normal shocks will be KYB gas adjust.

If I add air shocks will they increase my cars shock dampening in the rear. Or do they only do that when air is added.
