The rod is on right it is the Bellcrank that is in the wrong position.
I think it was on the 56 235 that I put in my friend's 53 that I beat my head against the wall on on that.
You have to take the bell crank off and turn it around so that the straight arm is up and the bent arm is facing down as the diagram that 57 tailgater posted shows.

I did that and the rod going to the carb is too short. Thats what I originally did. I went to a friends shop yesterday and he had a rod off an automatic trans with the kickdown and its longer and the bell crank is different but it should work like the manual shows. Its a couple inches longer and adjustable. This motor came with a auto choke carb and I think the linkage is different. It came with the parts in the photo and they worked but it wont go back together .
