transmission problems

I have a1985 crewcab dually with a 454, 400turbo. I was driving today, and at an intersection waiting for the light, smoke started coming out from under the truck, very heavy. I pulled over in a parking lot, and opened the hood, and transmission fluid was boiling out of the filler tube of the transmission, the smoke was coming from the fluid spilling on to the exhaust. What would cause this? and has anybody had this happen to them? I have never seen this happen before. TIA.
