I think I'm gonna hold out for another 67-72...
Well damn, didn't take too long
After a water pump went out and I got a few offers I couldn't refuse, I started parting my '72 C10, the bedless wonder with a pretty nice 350. Ended up selling the engine out, then the tilt column, auto tranny, and some other stuff. Sure have some fond memories of really, really suprising the local riceburners with that beater. I had fitted a TBI setup off of a 454 on top of an edelbrock performer manifold as well as a few other mods...she moved. And would easily light up the back tires in 2nd with a 3.07 rear. To replace it, I got a lifted '83 K5 blazer. Boy did GM ever go downhill in the 80's. Some things just seemed like really ****ty design, fit, finish and manufacture. I don't think I'll ever buy another GM product made after '75 and before '88 or so. I guess when I bough the truck I was enticed by the cheap price and mileage (diesel), although I found it a little weird that the truck had a factory "low coolant level" warning. Something tells me that the head failures these babies had were something that some moneymongering asshole knew about before they got off the design floor and went to production. Incidentally, while driving it, a friend of mine destroyed the engine by overheating it because of the head cracking problem (apparently it got worse). Anybody interested in some trick 4x4 parts...check the 73-87 parts board. So I think I'm going to go for another 67-72 chevy truck, probably a half ton. Right now since I make somewhat frequent trips between Ames, IA and Delano Minnesota because of school, I am a bit concerned with mileage. Right now my eyes are set on a '69 Longhorn with an inline 6 and 4 on the floor. Eventually (one of those projects thats gonna get done, damnit, hopefully before I graduate college) I might be considering dropping the in-rebuild Caddie Northstar sitting in the garage in it. But for now I would like something that has a descent looking body, reliability, some personality in styling and at least descent mileage (hoping for high teens...maybe an overdrive manual in this trucks future). |
