Need an answer, quick!

I need to change the flywheel on my truck(350, th350). How hard is it to get the tranny out? I have not front clip on. Do I have to drop the cross member? What is the easiest way to do it?

The flywheel was stripped by the starter gear. The starter is a "new" reman that I just put in there. Are shims generally used? How do I know how many? I need some answers tonight because I won't have a computer tomorrow when I am working on it...

Thanks
