starter question

I put a new battery cable on today, I put it on the big bolt in middle of starter.
On each side are two small posts what do they do? The only reason I ask is the battery cable is resting againest one of the post starts fine will that have any ill effects? I think the metal part of the cable is touching it.

I really dont want to mess with it any more if I dont have to headers make it a tight fit.
