break and booster question
I put a booster out of a 78 suburbon in my 70 truck and it leaks, can i rebuild it myself. Also I put disks and a proportning valve off a 72, the rear will lock up if I apply the breaks hard. Iasthere an adjustment on the pro valve.

If you come up with a parts source please post. I have been looking for the cylinder shaft and seal with no luck. This is the usual leak area for boosters,
although the diaphrams can leak. Jim |

Is your '70 drum/drum or did you convert to front discs. Discs take a lot more brake fluid & would explain why your proportioning valve from a 72 (disc/drum) would send too little to the front brakes, causign the back to lockup before the front even really grab.

more info
the 70 was a drum/drum. Now it has disk/drum from a 72 and a pro valve and master cylinder for a 72 disk/drum. All the break components are new accept the lines. Could the lines be the problem

if the booster is bad you can not rebuild it at home.

Never heard of rebuild kits of any type myself.
As for your locking up...all your brake parts are 72 with the exception of the booster, correct? How easily does the rear lock up? You can replace the non adjustable factory unit with an adjustable one from any performance dealer. (Jegs, Summit) Then fine tune your front to rear adjustment in a big parking lot at different speeds and even conditions. (turning, loaded, wet roads...ect) |

The rear brakes are always supposed to lock up first before the front disc brakes when braking hard because otherwise the rear of truck will past the front in a spin if front brakes locked up first.

exactly, that is why I was asking how easily they lock up in back. Plus, they are also set more towards braking with a load which does hinder the stopping when empty. I've been wanting to look into a prop valve that adjusts according to how much weight is in the bed. I know later fords have this feature...seems like a pretty good idea IMO.
