Shaved Door Handles

I am getting ready to order the kit needed to shave my door handles and locks. What company would everyone go with and what size of silinoid? I want to have the doors open by remote. Of course I want the cheapest possible but I also want to be able to get in the truck when it is time to drive it.

I can't help on the door solonoids for shaved handles. I can recommend Autoloc as a company. We used their kit in my 77 for power door locks. The door lock solonoids work great, and the remotes do to. The remotes have great range and extra channels if you want to add other features controlled by them...

I would recomend autoloc as well, if you dont mind paying a little more. When I shaved mine I used a regular power lock solenoid. I removed one of the springs for the latch mechanism to make it easier to open, then I bent the rod that comes with the solenoid to push the latch open and it works great. It only cost me $65 for the alarm to open the door and an additional $6 in solenoids. I posted some pics on the board here a while back but since the search is not working it may be hard to find them. If you need me to take pics of how I did my install I might be able to take some this weekend. Good luck

If you have time I would like to see some pics. I have never done this before so I need all the help I can get. I have not heard anything bad about Autoloc. A little more expensive but it sounds like it is worth it. Do you have a way to get into your truck if you loose power?

Autoloc makes great stuff and they have been around a while so I wouldnt worry about the quality of their parts at all. I will try and get some pics for you on Sat. I have been planning on adding a hood release type cable for the door but I havent gotten around to it yet. One other thing you could do is add a battery back up for your alarm/keyless entry so if the car battery dies the alarm will still have power so you can open your doors.

my bro had a weathertight push button wired up so all he had to do was get a 9 volt batery(the little rectangular ones) and conect one end to the + and just hold it on the frame, never had a problem with it.

the thing about gettin ur doors open if the battery is dead the kits come with a emergency cable for that, and somebody said about the corner windows leave them cracked so u can open them up and u can stick ur arm in there to open up the door, i tried it and i did it so i felt altitle better about it lol

Why not get a couple bicycle cables and run then through the door end up into the fender and have them come out right by the fire wall by the hood hinge. If your battery is dead then you can grab the cable and release the door.


Yeah yeah hood release. on the 79 I had the cable brake and I just took the grill out. I looked at this on my 88 that to get the grill out you have to lift he hood. It looks like you can release the hood with a screw driver.

another option is a way to power the truck without lifting the hood. A lot of 4x4 folks put a fork lift battery conector up in the grill. They use those to plug in Winch or jumper cables. That would let you get power to the truck without opening anything . Just hide it behind the bumper. Most 4x4 shops have those in stock its that common.

YEs all this is well and good if you didnt shave your inner doors as well to eliminate the ease of breakins and make it look cleaner heheheh.

I think the most reliable back up would be the cable. If something goes wrong with the wiring, switch, alarm +12v isnt going to help very much.

LOHRTBT-Shaving the inside is a cool idea. Do you shave your window handle? How do you raise and lower your windows?

My truck will not be a dailey driver. Will 35lb solenoid be enought or do I need the 50lb

Get the heavy duty solenoid just to be safe. TOo much is better than not enough~

their is no need to spend that much money!! I will put some pictures up this weekend and show you how I did mine. They have been working perfect for over 5 years now and my truck was driven daily up until about 2 yrs ago. A 3lb door actuator is all you need.
