Rims, tire sizes, 4/6 drop HELP!
I tried this question on the suspension forum and didnt have much luck so let me reword it and try here. I have a 67swb and am planning a 4/6 static drop and am in the market for rims and tires. I found some rims i like, they are Boss 311 and available in 20x8.5 +10mm offset & 5 1/8 bsm and 22x9.5 +12mm offset & 5.682 bsm and was thinking about using the 20"s up front and 22"s in the rear. Will these rims fit on my truck without any problems?
When i used the tire size calculator it said that i shouldnt have that much difference in rim size...... why is that and does anyone have any info to offer on this and what problems it might cause? Next, if it is possible to run this combo, what size tires will fit would you recomend? I want a sidewall of about 4" so i was thinking 245/40/20 up front and 285/35/22 in back. That would give me a diameter of 27.71 in front and 29.85 in back, would that work without problems? I would like everyones opinions on this because i know very little about tire sizes and i know even less about what would fit. Please share your experiences and problems i might run into. I would be willing to tub the rear if i have to but would prefer to find a combo that would fit under the truck as it is. If you guys think that i will have alot of problems with 22's in back then i guess i could run 20's but i am concerned that an 8.5" rim wont be able to put enough rubber on the ground. What do you guys think? Heres a picture of the rims i want to use. |

This is exactly the thing that I am working through right now. I have the Boss 301 in a 20x8.5 on all 4 corners. I have 275/45s Goodyears, and they look a little too skinny for my taste. I just bought this truck and it came with this tire and wheel setup. I like the wheels but want something wider in the rear. Boss doesn't make a 22" in the 301s but they do make a 23x10". I was wondering if these would fit. I'm not opposed to cutting and welding to make the wheelwells wider. Then maybe going with a 305 or a 315 tire. I could make it anything work with enough sweat and/or money. I just haven't decided. The local tire shop say that I could swap tires for new 285/45 Goodyears which are about an inch wider and go with an aluminum spacer. All of that for $200 w/ him keep my tires. That's a thought but not sure about the spacer holding up to my 400 small block. I'll be interested in what you find out. Take care

Hey Neal, how do those 20's do in the front, any rubbing? How low is your truck? Ive been asking everyone i know this question and hopefully someone will help with an answer. I went through all 39 pages of the picture forum looking for a truck with a 20/22 set up and didnt see one.
Im hoping for an answer pretty soon or i guess i'll have to go with 20X8.5 all around and just deal with the skinny tires in back. Whats the back spacing on your 301's? Got any pics of your truck? |

How much is my truck dropped? That's a good question. I bought this truck off a guy that didn't do any of the work. He couldn't answer any of my major questions. I think that my truck is a 4/6 drop. I think!? Any ideas? The 20's on the front are fine. No rubbing whatsoever! That's with a 275/45/20. I don't know the offset...sorry. I think that a 22x10 would work with the proper offset from just looking at it. There is alot of room in those wheelwells. I hope this helps. Neal |

Yep
It's a 3/4 drop. I just found the spring numbers are from Classic Performance Products. Neal |

That drop looks pretty good on your truck but i am looking to go a little lower with mine. It looks like you got plenty of room for a larger rim in back but im not so sure i would with it being dropped and extra 2 inches in the rear. Ive put this question to everyone i could find with big rim experience on these trucks and am hoping someone will come back with a solid answer for us.

GreyHound...let me know what you find out on these wheels. I have a 67 SWB frame I am using under a 68 body, going with about the same drop...wanting to run those same exact wheels and have been asking several of the same questions that you asked. It seems most of the wheel threads here are always for 69-70's or 71-72's, and I think some of those years have different width rear ends from the 67-68's. Anyway...I hope this isn't as confusing to read as it was to write, but would sure appreciate any info you can pass along...even down the road if you decide to go with them, let me know how they worked out. Thanks!!

np 67chev, it looks like alot of guys here are looking to do this same combo and i guess i'll be the first to take the leap. I have spoke with several guys who have run taller tires on 20X10's without problems so i think i'll be okay if not for the back spacing issue. If i have to im not scared to tub the rear a bit or add some spacers if needed. I originally planned to raise my wood bed floor a inch or two anyway for exhaust clearance issues and still may do that. Im still looking around for who has the best price on these rims but ive got it narrowed down to a few places. Tires are another story .... it looks like tires are going to cost as much if not more than the rims. I'd like to see pics of trucks with 20/22 combo to make sure it looks okay but i havent been able to find any. Im not a fan of the look of the 18/20 combo but i think thats because i think 18's look too small up front. Most everyone with 20's has their truck bagged and at this point i would settle for seeing a 4/6 drop truck with 22's all around but cant seem to find even that. I went through EVERY post on the picture forum yesturday and didnt see any. I'm going to try and get my rims ordered this week but it will be awhile before i can get tires on them and get them mounted. I havent even or ordered my drop kit yet and my new rotors wont ship out until Jan 3rd so someone might beat me to the punch on this since there seems to be alot of guys thinking about trying this combo. I will go back to this thread and PM everyone who is interested in this once i has test fitted everything but it looks like it will be awhile. Keep me posted if you find out anything before me.

GreyHoundSteve,... This is just my opinion,... But i would lower the truck FIRST. I know alot of people can't wait to get some wheels,... but I've seen tons of posts about people trying to make their wheels work with the DROP they just bought. Also try to stay away from using spacers.
