Voltage regulator
Ok need help my lights get real bright then dim and again but the last time they just kept getting dim and know after it sit's awhile it won't start just runt,runt runt,battery dead so i can charge it just a little and then will fire right up,I think it's charging cause it will run without posi cable on so I'm thinking it's the voltage regulator,took cover off and saw a little corrosion,should it be grounded,where it's mounted there's rubber mounts but there's also a ground wire going to it.hhmm puzzled.

The only advice I can think of is to switch to an internally regulated alternator. It took me a long while to get around to that but I'll never go back to external regulators.

As to the ground,yes it should be grounded. The rubber isolators are for vibration. If it runs with the Bat disconected it sounds like it is charging but maybe not enough what is the voltage at the Bat with the engine at about 2000rpm? Should be about 14.2+-.

Thanks for the info,I looked at it this evening and guess what It was the belt all the inside ribs were gone thus slipping on the alernator.put on another belt and whala.fixed.Don't know why I didn't notice it yesterday.Anyhow thanks again Randy

If you are diagnosing the charging system by pulling the cable (neg is safer and just as effective) then all you are discovering is that your alt is putting out 8 volts and 5 amps. That's all that's really needed to run the engine on something like these old trucks.
Remove negitive, turn on headlights, heater, stereo...ect. Or go to auto zone and have them put there handy dandy charging system tester on there for free. |

My lights went bright/dim too, and I replaced the voltage regulator...fixed my problem and was cheap to try. I am also switching to internal reg. soon. Many board members say to switch so I am taking the hint.
