It's Bed time...
As some of you may know My 71 GMC has a utilty bed and I would like to get a normal bed for it. I just don't need that much storage. So today I hit a local junk yard and find a 71 Longbed in fair shape down a few cars I find a 73 long step in better shape. they are asking 150 for either one. Over all I like the long step mostly because it is in better shape and just about all of it is there but the tailgate. The Fleetside has the tailgate but I would have to get all the light housings..
My big question is will the 73 fit. is it a bolt on or will I have to fab up mounts? Thanks Guys Eric

The fenders will be shaped wrong for a 71. Can you live with that?

Although it will work, it will look out of place. The rear wheels will not be centered in the step wheel openings. At least they don't on the short steps, so I would assume that it is the same for long step. For my $.02, go with the 71 bed.

I haven't found anyone that wants this thing...lol. I do like the bed but it's just to much. I'm sure it weighs just a little bit too.

I asked the yard if they would trade me but no. And I haven't run into anyone that has a need for mine yet...
Would the fender bolt holes be the same? Or would I have to weld the olds ones up and drill new ones...

The wheel base on the 73 - 87 is something like 131 isn't it? (verses the 127 on your rig)

You are right Longhorn. I did a search and the 73/87 are 131.5....So the longstep is out of the question.
The price of the 71 fleetside is a good one but I'm not sold on it yet.

I think utility beds look sweet with the right paint & some aluminum checkerplate in the right places. I wish somebody had one locally had one to get rid of, I'd be there in a minute!

I'd chop the bed to the height of a stocker and do something with the wheel well opening to help it blend in and it would be really cool
I don't have photoshop but I did a quick -MS paint-overhaul
