clunk sound
If it makes a louder than normal clunk when I shift into reverse is that the u joint? Or do they just make a loud clunk when shifting into reverse? It idles at about 1000 rpm in park.

That would be my guess. The 82 did the same thing. Now she is quiet. Replace both if your going to do it. Well worth the effort. If your's has a carrier bearing (2 piece drive shaft), that may be worth looking at replacement also while your down there.

I think they all do it to some degree. If it is making a really loud clunk id look at the u joints also. But my HD has a little bit of noise when I shift into reverse. And I know nothing is wrong with it...Later Mike

If your auto tranny rear mount bolt gets loose......it will make a louder clunk when going from drive to reverse.
I have to tighten mine every 5 years or so. |

I thought they just did it, especially when parked on an incline without a parking brake (like mine is everyday, unfortunately).
