Rear End Ratio
Jack up the rear of the truck, put a chalkmark on the tire and the driveshaft. Rotate the tire one full turn and count revolutions of the driveshaft. That will be your ratio. Otherwise, you pull the rear cover, count the teeth on the ring and pinion. Divide the number on the pinion into the number on the ring. These numbers are stamped on the ring gear if you know what you're looking at. May also be on the tag on the glove box door, but that's subject to change. Hope this helps. Frank

I'll say what i always say...if you remove the rear cover, and count the teeth on the driven gear, and divide it into the number of theeth on the drive gear, that'll get your ratio.
You'll also be able to look at the wear pattern and look for teeth missing or chipped, and you can pour in fresh oil instead of that 10 - 30 year old stuff that isn't doing much in the ay of lubricating. |

If you jack up one rear tire (not both), you can rotate that tire TWO full turns & count driveshaft revs to get your ratio. This only works on open rear ends, not posi.

jimfulco; Maybe that's why I could never get that to work for me. I'm with Longhorn Man, I just pull the cover, look for the numbers stamped on the ring gear, and do the math.
