You are replacing everything (balljoint, nut etc. ) anyway, right? I can see by your pic that you have a bit of room to move. Cut the shaft of the ball joint (just under the A-arm) with a hacksaw.

I rebuilt my front end last month. I got to it cause I dropped a lower ball joint on the passenger side. I was going 10 mph at the time. If it broke on the freeway who knows if I'd be here now. I thank God for that. Guys, old/worn front end parts are as dangerous as bad brakes. Take care of them when neccessary.
