73-87 rears into 70?
i just picked up a 44 front diff and a 14 bolt rear. the fourtten bolt is out of a 73 and the 44 is out of a 74. so my question is what kind of mods will i have to make to make these things work ie: moving spring pads/ shock mounts or are these things a direct bolt in. and also does onayone know how to differentiate between the 10.5 and 11.5 ring gears in the 14 bolt?

the 14 bolt is either a 9.5" ring gear (semi float, abreviated SF) or a 10.5" ring gear (full float, abrevited FF) the difference is drastic and the full float is much more desirable. pirate4x4.com has a 14 bolt bible in the tech section but it's only usefull to you if you have the full float.
http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml will show you exactly what axle you have. all you will have to do to convert is move the spring perches. MAKE DEAD SURE YOU HAVE THE SAME GEAR RATIO BEFORE YOU DRIVE THESE!!!

The 11.5 inch 14 bolt was not used until the late 90's, so its safe to say you don't have that. If the 14 bolt is from a 1 ton, then the spring pads will be correct, but you will need new shock mounts. If its from a 3/4 ton, you need new spring pads and shock mounts. The front axle may need shock mounts, but the spring pads are definitely ok.

i have to differ with 1969GMC...
some 14 bolt info... 1973-1987 truck, Blazer, or Suburban axles are 72 inches from end to end (measuring from the end of the axle-retaining bolts), 66-1/2 inches from wheel flange to wheel flange (with drum brakes), and the leaf-spring centering-pin holes are 42-3/4 inches apart. For 1967-1972 trucks, Blazers, and Suburbans axles are 70-3/4 inches wide, 66-3/4 inches from flange to flange, and 40 inches from pin to pin. there is no difference in 3/4 and 1 ton spring location on trucks in any generation that i know of. i have a 70k10 converted to a 1 ton with dana 60 front and ff14 rear.

The one tons are 40.5" center pin to center pin on the rear 14 bolt.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm |
