I am aware that the bushings and pins are available but can you also buy the "strap" piece that keeps the door from overextending itself (I think it's called the door check retainer)? If so... can you point me to them?

XXL, I just re-built a set of hinges for my '71 4x4 and during the process fixed that problem. For the upper hinge I used a small punch to drive out the roll pin that holds that flanged web extention betweeen the two hinge sections. Don't drive it out all the way. Just enough to remove that flange section from the hinge and it will then slip out of the hinge. Then take a small pair of vise grips and clamp them to the section that has a slight depression or dimple. Clamp the jaws directlly on that dimple and using a straight blade screwdriver gently pry open the webbing of the sections. It will only take a bit of pressure , do one side and then do the other side so that spacing is equal along the metal web. It worked for me quite well, door stays open now as it should and the hinges are good and tight. I also lubed the bushing internally with lithium grease before I pressed the new pin in using a bench vise. The pin I had was too long (3/4") but nothing a hack saw and a visit to the bench grinder wouldn't cure. I now this is a bit long and probably not stated correctly but hope you get the idea. Thanks, I actually need that part. I have a pair of hinges that are missing that piece. I was planning to rebuild them but need that part as well.

I went to my local GM dealer and got them to order the parts. Jerry Moss gave me the part numbers You will need them because most new dealerships don't have no way to look them up. I will look and see if I can find them.

Am working on my 68 with the same problem (door check hardware broken/missing). It is much easier to do with the hinges off the door, but that may not be a luxury you have. I don't. Any way, for the door check you will need 2 straps, L/R, 4 strap retainers, little H shapped objects, 2 for each door, 1 over and 1 under the strap; and 4 friction pads. They fit inside the retainers and squeeze the strap as the door is opened to help slow it down before the stop is engaged.

For everything, should be under $40, with the door check strap being the most expensive part, about $12 - $15 each.

I posted awhile back that the lower hinge on a full size chevy van looks exactly like the upper hinge on our trucks. Trying a pic. Well its sideways but you can see it. This is my 95 G20 van.

Just got off the phone with a dealer in my area... he quoted prices as follows--

$26.82 - 3934499 - arm-2 needed.
$12.00 - 3891811 - pad retainer-4 needed.
$6.80 - 15672666 - pad-4 needed.
$14.84 - 20046147 - pin-4 needed.
$5.60 - 9721917 - pin bushing-8 needed

$66.06 - total!

Anyone have any suggestions for better-than-list pricing on this stuff? For that price I may have to just use a rope

Try these folks....i looked all your part numbers up and they seem to offer all of them....and look to be somewhat cheaper than the dealer's price. Unsure if they will sell individually, or only by the package...
NOTICE PACK QUANTITY!!! - - I dunno, but it sounds like the dealer may be quoting you an entire pack to cover his cost on ALL of them.....

Yep, it looks like they only sell in the packs. If I can't find the exact quantity somewhere else, I may just break down and get the packs and have spares for me or others who might need such animals. Maybe we need to have a "rebuild your hinges" week and do a giant group buy of a truckload of these things

Tom Chevrolet in Norwood, MA. I walked in once to look at a new Tahoe and when they saw that I had 'Option 1' paperwork with me (I get to buy GM vehicles at employee purchase price

), they wouldn't give me the time of day... it seems no huge profit = no attention.
