Did I strike chome or bare metal?

I was trying to clean up my center caps for my rallys and noticed
a few of the scratches were pretty shiny. So I rubbed off all the
grey paint on the outer rim and I think I found chome?

Did they really paint over chrome on these center caps?

Yes they did paint over chrome on a lot of those.

I agree. I striped the paint off mine and kept them chrome. Just use paint strippers and rinse it off after a couple of minutes. I think the look alot better all chrome with the bowtie sticker in the center.

They painted over the chrome because the chrome will not go up in the recesses around the lug nuts....if you strip the paint off there it will rust

Well they were on my 87 burb for 1 year thru the winter soaked in salt and they never rusted.
