tranny help

I searched the past posts and couldn't find the info so here's the question.

What is the gearing differences between the 4 spd granny gear (sm465?) and the 3 spds in our trucks? Is the gearing the same except the 4 speed has the extra granny gear?

I am trying to decide whether to buy one but if there isn't much of a difference from the 3 speed that I have, I don't know if it's worth the 200 or 250 it will be with shipping.

Aside from the granny gear, driving a 465 is just like driving a 3 speed. It is a lot stronger tranny than any of the 3 speeds, but there is really no other advantage for street driving.

thanks tim,
so if I successfully my new engine to 400 hp, 425 ftlbs of torque I should probably get the 4 speed granny because it will handle the power better... right?

I looked at the chart but I didn't find the 3 spd ratios on there. Thanks alot though.

If you are after proformance ( you stated before about building a 400hp motor ) ,I would invest is a car 4 speed, like a Borg Warner T-10 or mabe a super muncie because those are better designed to take the power and quick shifting you'll be wanting. Granny gear is more for towing and is kinda sloppy when you go to powershift. You'll also find proformance clutches and pressure plates for the T-10 and muncie.

If I can find a muncie at a reasonable price, I might do that but will I be able to tow anything if I need to... I want a tranny to get some performance out of but I also need to tow trash and a car once in a while.

You can tow once in a while with a performance set up...as long as we aren't talking a lenco or something wild like that.
I agree on going with the car tranny if you are going for performance. Otherwise, you'd feel like the UPS guy every time you try to shift quickly...and if you've never tried speed shifting a UPS truck...trust me, there is nothing fast about it.

That is what i needed. A little ups man analogy. My little 3 speed and 250 inline is suprisingly quick but I can't even imagine it behind a stout 350. Thanks everyone, I have direction now.
