Backup lights
My backup lights aren't working and have never worked (at least since I got the truck, and the PO said they didn't work). I have a 72 with a four speed. Did they have working backup lights originally? If so, where does the wire plug into the tranny? Are they on the same fuse as the tailights, etc.? I haven't really done a whole lot of research into the wiring for them, just looking for some info.
Thanks!

Back up lights are seperate fuse, check the trans on the reverse lever for the switch, if not hook up a toggle switch, I have them in all my 3 speeds, make sure to check the light housing grounds, you will need a light tester and check it, if it has power and the light doesnt come, its the ground, may have to make a housing ground.......

The reverse switch should plug in on the column close to the firewall (if it is an original automatic, there is also a neutral safety plug). I think that one wire is hot when the key is on. Then put it in reverse and the other will go "hot", thus sending voltage to towards the lights. If it is hot coming into the switch, then hot headed out of the switch, the issue is farther back. Check the bulb connector to see if the contact is hot. If so, then the housing is not grounded (as stated by 71MGC10).

It sounds like you have a manual tranny, the plug should be toward the front of the tranny near the top. IIRC I could get to mine from the drivers side of the tranny while laying underneath the truck. It was VERY hard to get enough room to get it plugged back in.

If you have a high hump remove the hump. on the driverside is the switch with plug, remover the switch and replace it. I tried cleaning the old contacts and it worked for a couple of months and I had to go back in. If you try to get it from under the truck good luck "lots of cussing when I did it that way~!"

Thanks all for the info. Yes, it's a high hump standard.
