Axle ID and swap info
I need some help with the ID on this axle. This rearend is out of my 71 3/4 ton 4x4 and is on it's last leg. There is an ungodly amount of slop in the driveshaft and It's starting to clunk really bad. I'm wondering if it would be smarter to swap in some new gears, or to swap a whole new axle into it. I have another axle that matches this one but I'm not sure if the ratio is the same.

That is the Eaton H052.
What direction is the slop? Does the driveshaft twist, or does it move the pinion in and out of the axle? If its just slop when its twisting, and you hear a clunking noise, I am willing to bet it has a factory No-Spin (detroit locker).

1969GMC I think that you hit it on the head. I was almost positive that it was an Eaton Axle. I also know that it does have the detroit in it because I found a reciept for the add-on in the manual when I got the truck. The problem is that the mice ate up so much of it that I couldnt read much of the paper. Anyhow the driveshaft rotates almost a whole turn by hand. I guess I though that this wasnt right. But now that I think about it should it really have that much slop? Are you saying that the no-slip is getting bad? Cause that would make sense. Also I think it has 3.73 gears in it. Is that possible? Anymore help is great.

I doubt it has 373 but if it does I need them regardless.

Basically you have most likely either 4.10 ratio or 4.57 ratio in one of these diff from a 3/4 ton. 5.13 possible.
Its an easy diff to swap out as it come out in a unit out the forward drive shaft end. |

No-Spins don't wear out. They inherently have a lot of slop, so that is normal. The clunking is normal too, from the few times I have driven a locked rig on the street (about 3-4 times). It was weird but I got used to it.
EDIT: the factory never offered 3.73's for the Eaton. 4.11, 4.57, 5.14, and 5.83 were the 4 factory gearsets (and even at that, i've only seen 5.83's on paper). There was an aftermarket 3.90 set available, but never a 3.73. This is just from my research, though. There may have been a set made at some time.
