70 Front Disk Brake Conversion ?
I have a complete front disk brake setup off a 71/72 1/2 ton 2wd and want to install it on my 70 GMC 1/2 ton. My question is, can I leave the existing upper and lower control arms, tie rods intact on my truck, and just bolt on the 72 spindles, calibers, etc. to them without any problems? I have the 6 lug setup on my truck now.
thanks, Steve Last edited by aurorable; 04-16-2005 at 10:48 AM. |

NO you can not. I'm doing the same conversion now and the 71/72 spindles use different ball joints and different tie rod ends. I ended up buying drop spindles from GMCPAUL, these allow me to use all my stock 70 front end parts.I think the spindles were 229.00, but if I used the stock 71 spindle I had in my garage, I would have spent that much on ball joints and tie rods. And the spindles from GMCPAUL'S are stock or 21/2 " drop.

Was just wondering about this as i haven't made up my mind yet on how I want to do this. The 71/72 setup I have is complete with tie rods and such. Was hoping to do as little swapping as possible. I'll look into GMCPaul for my spindle options.....
Thanks again, steve |

How complete? You can just bolt in the whole front X-member if you have it.

If you have the 71/72 tie rods, you would only have to change your ball joints, maybe only the lower one. If you call GMCPAULS I'm sure they would answer any questions you have. I also bought their 6 lug rotors, it came in a kit with calipers, pads, all the new bearings, and dust caps.
