License Plate Flip Down Kit - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Has anyone bought or seen the license plate flip kit for a 72 chevy before. I have a rollpan that doesn't have a bracket for the plate, and I found this kit thing on brotherstrucks. But they don't have a picture up for it. I've been keeping my plate in the rear glass, but I keep getting hassled about it. Any one got any suggestions?

you can get hasseled about those flip down kits also, because it is technically against the law to park on public streets and not have your plate showing

I'm using a flip down bracket off a 87 IROC I took the motor/trans out of. Probally cost ya $2 at your local wrecking yard.

Anybody got a picture of what one of these looks like? So the license plate is not visible when you are driving?

Just look around in the boneyard for an early 70's Chev , like a Malibu, with the spring loaded license plate that flips open for getting access to the gas filler. Then rig up some kinda method for flipping it while driving.

What exactly would be the purpose of not having your plates visible while driving?

I think it's more the idea of hiding it when your parked. When you start the truck it flips down to make it visible. I have seen a few custom trucks around here with it. I don't know how much the cops like it though.

So the purpose is to flip it down when you are driving and flip it back up when you are parked? I wish I had a roll pan that had the bracket for the plate, but this pan was on it when I bought the truck. The guy I bought it from had some heavy duty magnets that he stuck to the plate and then just stuck it somewhere on the tailgate when he drove, but I don't really like that option too much. Any other ideas for what to do? Here is a pic, it is the third picture down.

I've got a flip up bracket that came with my hidden hitch kit from ECE. It flips up so you can put the drawbar into the receiver hitch....is that what you are talking about?

I just want some way to mount my license plate on the outside rather than in my back glass. This flip down kit seemed to be a viable option, but I'm not sure if it is what i'm looking for.

Thats a sharp truck you got there! I would say just recess it somewhere on the tailgate, but you still have the "chevrolet" and some real nice paint.... That's a tricky one there..... buy a plate recessed roll pan and have it painted to match? Is the pan bolted or welded?

I had the same problem and after looking at all of my options i decided to replace the pan with one that had the bracket for the plate in it. If your pan isnt welded i would do just that. If its welded i have seen some lexan rear windows that have a cut out for plates and are even lit. I think Stylin Concepts sells them and they arent too pricey either. It would also help you ditch that sliding rear window .... unless you like it that is.

Sounds like the one I have would work. Check ECE's website.

The trucks I saw with the flip downs were more to solve the problem supermanox is having. They wanted a smooth back end without a license plate sticking out. So at shows the plate would be hidden and while driving it is there.
I can't find the kit that I saw but here is one from streetbeat. Can mount it behind the rollpan and slide it down.

So you just manually flip it up and down. That seems to be a pretty easy option. I don't want to replace the rollpan or the rear sliding window. Does anyone else have this same problem.....Rollpan without a license plate bracket?

That's pretty nice, but more expensive than what I'm looking for. I might just try to rig some kind of bracket behind the roll pan and let the plate just hang down.

I have seen them hanging on small chain,but they sway and the cops don't like that.I have also seen them attatched to a piece of rubber cut out of a big rigs mudflap,and attatched to a bracket that hangs behind the pan.The rubber is stiff and the plate doesn't move much,but if You back into the curb,the rubber will give instead of bendind something.Just don't attatch it to the pan.

Just glue a couple magnets to the back of your plate. When you park it, rip it off the truck. When you want to drive, stick it back on. I'd carry all your papers with you tho, cause for sure eventually you'd forget the plate & get stopped. That kind of thing usually happens at the worst possible moment too.

i magnets would probably scratch the paint though. if you know how to weld, or know some one that does you could just fab up a box and cut out the center of your roll pan and weld it in. but then you would have to repaint your pan but its better than buying a new pan and having it painted. but once you solve your plate mounting, they will start pulling you over for no license plate light. ask me how i know

I think I'm going to just try rigging something for now, because I don't want to cut into the roll pan at all. If I can't get it to look nice, I'll have to look more at the flip down kit. I'm going to the show in pigeon forge a week from now, so maybe I'll get some inspiration there
