Bought another one. Time to start planning it out.
I just got back in from buying a 68 short fleetside. It's a pretty rough example, but since my 72 long fleet got totaled, I have most of the parts. And it was CHEAP. The thing I'm unsure of is what to do with the tranny. It's factory 3 speed and mine is a th400. Should I bite the bullet and start scrounging 4 speed parts, or just go with the auto? What would you guys recommend behind a 400+ hp 402? Go with a Munice, or maybe one of the later model 5 speeds?

If you want to stick with an auto I'd build the th400...

The th400 is already rebuilt. I had it done the same time I had the BBC rebuilt. It's been so long since I had a manual behind a big block I thought it might be fun. I just wasn't sure how feasible it would be to round all the stuff up to do it. I do know I'm going to have to find a decent rear end for it. Maybe a 12 bolt with 3.73's or maybe 3.31 or something like that. I just talked to the local powder coater and he quoted me 1200 to blast and PC the frame, so I might end up doing a body off on this one. I'm sure my other half will love that.

That three spd auto will be awesome behind your BB unless you like banging gears... get the muncie rock crusher.

I have to say I'm leaning towards the Muncie idea. Anybody have an idea on what I need to look for? Are there more than one shifter locations on these trannys?
