Heat Riser knocking

Got what sounds like a knock coming from the heat riser on an 85 truck with a 305 engine. I have sprayed wd40 on it thinking that would help but it still knocks. it seems like it is free but i don't know how it is supposed to work.
At first I thought it was a rod knocking but it is the heat riser. Haven't a clue what causes it and what to do. I am hoping someone on this board has had this happen and knows what to do. I thought about disconnecting it but don't know if that is a good move or not.
Any suggestions?

Is it the vacuum-operated variety? You could disconnect and plug the vacuum source to see if that makes a difference; it's warm enough out now so that it won't take very long for the engine to warm up.
