Have a small transmission leak--HELP?
Hey all!.......I have a 84 C10, with modded 305 and 350 transmission -w- shift kit.....I am having an irritating small leak from the rear seal at the yoke where the u-joint connects up.....I have had a "new" seal put in....then found out the shop put in too much fluid....took that out, was OK for a couple days, and it is now dripping ever so slowly from that seal area I think ....any ideas???

If the yoke is not smooth and clean where the seal rides, with no grooves cut in it, that can make even a new seal leak. Also, I've seen yokes leak many times at the plug behind the joint. Hope that helps.

When I had work done on my 85 tranny the shop only tightened the pan bolts finger tight and tranny fluid was slowly leaking past the gasket toward the back of the tranny making it appear that I had a leak at the back of it. You might want to check it out and also make sure that the gasket didn't get boogered up in the process. Just my 2 cents.

Did you narrow it down to that or what? I have seen them leaking from around the pan and the fluid ending up in the back. But was the yoke all cleaned up good. I have seen where they were not cleaned up good and just started to leak again.

The bottom of the trans and pan, yoke are all very clean....to look at it...it looks either like it is dripping from the rear seal, OR, possibly from off of the front of the driveshaft/u-joint---if that makes sense....the fluid is collecting in droplets and coming off of the very front of the u-joint/driveshaft.......
What has also been very funny------it can go for a few days and not leak at all, and then all of a sudden I will see a puddle under the truck for a few days straight....... Driving me nuts!

Just a tip...none of the local parts stores could gather up the parts I needed to fix it. Most even said I didn't know what transmission I had because my truck was only available with a 700R4. They were wrong. They also insisted that the o-ring in that article did not exist. I went to the dealer, and they had everything I needed with no hassle. If it turns out that your yoke is grooved, I was able to buy a new one locally for about $60 recently. The dealer said it was no longer available. Slonaker |
