Is this on your truck, or one that you saw?

What year model is it?

Best I can decipher from my service manual, is not too much. I'm sure you have already done that, but it's a conventional (cab, chassis, panel) with an L-6 gasoline engine. It has a 5500-8100 lb GVW (noted to be 7500-lb on plate). After that, it's a guess. I don't have a clue. According to my '69 book, it should have at least two more numbers, like maybe the following: CS2_4_8Z153538. The underscored spaces would add to the next number (like 14- for a distance of 84-89 inches from the cab to the axle) but the kicker is the 8. My manual doesn't list an eight for the 6th or 7th position in the VIN.

The Z is the assembly plant. The remaining 6 numbers are the build sequence at that particular plant.

I'm guessing this truck is older than a '69, and it should have option G50 (rear leaf springs).

So, what is it?

It's a '68 for sure ,,,, but like mine you don't get much info from the VIN .

Get the model # off the glove box (if it's there) and that will tell ya' a little more.

I have a 68 GMC with VIN # CM10CPB42354... I haven't seen a vin decoder that has it in it?

C=2-wheel drive
S=6-cylinder
2=3/4 ton
4=pick up (cab&bed)
8=1968
Z=Fremont
153538= production #

The info on the glovebox door would tell more.

According to this book you should have 13 character serial numbers not 12 I got this info out of GMC Truck Master Parts Book 1967-1968-1969

Dirt Dobber: the "M" is for a V-6 GMC engine that your rig originally came with.
"P" might be the GM Truck assembly plant at Pontiac, Mich.
There should be an "8" in the fifth digit place for the year numeral.[or not, see below]
I see GMC did things different than the Chevy Division. My Chevy pickup's VIN is CS148Z1239xx (last 2 omitted for security reasons) so I know its a 2wd,L-6,1/2-ton,SB Stepside, 1968, made at Fremont, Calif. MY Jimmy's VIN sort of follows Chevy usage: KE114S1348xx and that's 4wd,V-8,1/2-ton, "utility" (Blazer), Aha! no Year numeral here with GMC, made in St. Louis, and the production sequence.
I bought a '72 Blazer rolling frame this spring and its VIN threw me because it started out: CKE182FXXXxxx. It took some later- model research to find they changed the system in '72 and '73. "C" was for Chevy Division, GMC would begin w/"T" for truck, yes it's a 4wd, once had a V-8, 1/2-ton, "8" here means Blazer/utility, and "2" is '72 - the year numeral, "F" is for Flint Michigan -- and it's got the rust spots to prove it. The "8" seemed wierd as did the chewing gum wads behind the VIN plate holding it on, but the frame had corresponding serial #'s so I guess it's OK. I really love the PO's Pepsi can and JB weld floor tub patches.

Looks similar to my VIN: CE247S112xxx. The Owner's Manual says it's supposed to be CE209347S112xxx. Either way, they both say I have a V8-equipped 1967 C20 Fleetside from St. Louis. Two numbers for the same vehicle. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear this was a gov't operation.

Wait a minute. 1967. Hmm. GM WAS the Gov't.

GM WAS the Gov't. __________________ '67 C20--427 tall deck/SM420, 4.10 HO52 (Michigan has not been kind to the Old Man) '95 Caprice--355 LT1/T56/3.42 8.5" 10-bolt (daily driver, almost 300k on the chassis) '07 Outback--wife's car. 125k & counting. No head gasket or transmission issues yet. fingers crossed
