The Rewards of Owning an Old Truck..

I was changing a much needed heater core on my '66 today. I was laying on the floor and trying like hell to get that last nut off of the heater box, when I spotted a hide-a-key hanging out on my stock speaker. You guys all know how it is to own an old truck, I mean the first thing I thought was "Hmm.. It came with two keys when I bought it. How many did the PO need?"

I grabbed it, and extracted myself from under the dash, and when I opened it? Boom! $35 bucks in new 1974 bills.

Total cost to buy my ride is now down to $365...

When i was taking the old wiring out from under the dash of my 65 i found some needles from the crack head i bought it from.

I found a mess load of used or atleast opend rubbers in the bed of the 66 I had. Figured I just melt them all down and make a tire and call it a goodyear...

i changed my heater core from under the hood.

Found a pair of brass knuckles under a seat of my 1970 chevy
truck. Sold the truck a few years later, still have the knuckles.
Never know what you will find.

i found a spare alternater under my seat!!!!! lol i don't even think the guy i bought it from, knew it was there.

I know what u guys mean I just removed everything out out the inside of the cab because I'm doing a complete restoration and I found 100.00 BUCKS in a box behind the seat next to the gas tank with a few cd's and some other stuff I was so excited I jumped up and smacked my head on the cab. LOL I own a 65 lwb truck

The contents of my '65 c10 lwb stepside in April 2003:

In the glove box: I found a small can of wd-40(even had a straw still, with plenty left in it), some bulbs for the 'auto parts store trailer lights' that were on the truck when I got first acquired it, a 20 gauge shotgun shell(still live), a few of the glass bulb fuses for the original fuse block on the firewall(I should have checked in there before I bought it, maybe I would have realized it had electrical demons - ha ha ha), some doodads that go to the trailer lights hookup in the back and the bill of sale from when the guy I bought the truck from, bought it from some other guy.

I found the spring thing that locks the stock jack in under the driver side bench seat rattling around on the floor.

It had a 8 track am/fm radio in it(which worked but has since been removed) with an Elvis greatest hits in it and a marie osmond tape and some other band in the glove box.

It even came with a cute plastic sign, stuck on the dash that says: thank you for not smoking.

I left that sign on there.

The spare wheel and tire was in the bed, along with a bunch of leaves.

Great thread! My 73 parts truck had a nice Craftsman pivot -head 1/2" drive socket wrench with the a 7/8" socket attached, behind the seat, as well as a full quart of oil, lots of change, and misc. other things. Ya just never know...

i found a 1" breaker bar burried in mub just the handle sticking up it gets lots of use on u bolts etc....oh wait that has nothing to do with finding stuff in a truck

I took the gas tank out of my '65 not too long after I bought it , thinking the the line might be partially clogged . when I removed the cardboard cover from over the tank , I found an Playboy magazine stuffed in behind it . I guess the previous owner didn't want his " mommy " to know he had it ? Think he spent too much time in the garage ?

I removed everything from inside my cab, ac/heater, gas tank, vents,etc…and all I found was a couple of rust spots! I know there is another hole in there somewhere however, it’s the one where all my money is disappearing into. I think it’s a big one too!

When I started My frame up on my 63,I found one roach clip and a small bag of what seemed to be some Marijuana, Maybe the truck traveled to WOODSTOCK back in the day??

I recently pulled out the torn-up rubber floormat and found the ignition KEYS including the locking gas cap, that the last owner couldn't find...worth alot to me! (I guess you can tell that the ol'66 hasn't moved since I got it)
I just removed the locking gas cap and pulled the gas tank and had it boiled out, radiator guy said the gas smelled at least 7-8 years old. Unlike whiskey, some things don't get better with age.

A followup to my previous post , I bought my truck in 1976 and it was my daily driver till about 10 yrs. ago . This truck is like a member of the family , in fact , I've had it longer than I've had my youngest daughter ( she's 23 yrs old now ) and it has fallen into disrepair in recent years but it IS time to get her back on the road , not as a daily driver but rather to get it back to the condition it was and the condition it deserves after all those years of service and satisfaction it has given to me !

thirty five bucks! Hell, that'll pay for the heater core! I'll bet it's a real ***** to change a heater core in the models with the fan motor inside.
When I bought my '66 I found an old 8" meat cleaver and an antique axe. Hmm... Come to think of it, the PO's son's name was Jason....

I also found a 6" deep pile of putrid sunflower seed shells, 2 shotgun shells buried in debris in the driver's side rear cab corneer - one 12ga and one .410 neither one fired, but dangerously corroded, 3 sawed off 1/4-20 bolts stuck in the fuse box instead of fuses, and "Copenhagen Racing Stripes" all down the driver's side bed. (you country boys know what I'm talking 'bout - I'll spare the rest of you the details there....)

I started a thread like this awhile back, I found one of the original keys with the knockout still in it, and the other knockout from the key I was given when I got the truck. They were taped to the wires coming out of the bulkhead connector on the driver's side firewall with probably a mile of 1 inch wide electrical tape.

I bought a truck off this old farmer who was a friend of my grandfather many years back. I took the seat out to have it recovered and found a gun strapped to the bottom of the seat. Went to the old man and found out that the gun was my grandfather's from when he owned the truck. Upon further research I found that my grandfather bought the truck new and won the gun in a card game. Pearl handled Colt .45 now sits in my safe.

I found the muffler reciept in my ride from 2 owners ago. Gave the guy a call and he gave me a chrome roll bar and back half of my soft top that I was missing.
