How do you id the ratio on rear gears?
Now I know this one has probably been on here 100 times, but I'm considering buying a posi rear with 3:73 ring and pinion gears. Can someone tell me what numbers and/or tooth count which would identify the correct ratio? Also, anything to look out for in the posi (pics only)?
Any info or suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks. Scott |

It's been asked enough that I know the answer
 Put a mark on the driveshaft. Lift one rear tire and release the e-brake. Count how many times you gotta spin the tire for the mark on the driveshaft to make one full rotation. Thta equals (approximately) your gear ratio. Example: If it takes 3¾ tire spins to make the driveshaft travel around once, you have 3.73 gears or close to it. 3 times would be 3.07 or whatever. 4 would be 4.11 or whatever. I don't know the exact numbers, I'm taking those off my head from reading previous other posts.

Divide the ring gear tooth count by the pinion gear tooth count to get the ratio. I don't recall the tooth count for 3:73's but the math above will tell you what you got..

I believe the ring has 41 teeth and the pinion has 11 on a 3.73. The ring gear should have 41:11 stamped on the outer diameter.

pjmoreland had it right 41/11 for a 3.73...at least that is what I counted on mine!

Thanks guys. The info Pjmoreland provided was what I was looking for, as the components will be removed from the housing (should have mentioned that previously).
