Starting issues

A little while ago, my 77K20 with a 4-speed, started giving me issues when starting. It would make an awful grinding/whining type noise. I pulled the starter and saw the gear was missing a tooth. I replaced the gear with one off of another starter with a broken nose cone and reinstalled the starter in my truck. The first time I started it it sounded fine and fired right up. I then turned it off, and tried to start it again, same thing as before. Do you guys have any suggestions on what it could be and what I can do to remedy this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like you need to shim up the starter.

How do I shim the starter? Is it as simple as buying some shims and putting one between the starter and the block? or is there more to it then that? Can anyone tell me what the problem might be as well? I want to fix it for sure, but I always like to know what is causing the problem, not just the solution. Thanks.
