I'm using a regular PRND21 column with my 700R4, and I can just barely shift into 1st. I hit my knee on the shifter when I step on the brake pedal though. My shifter linkage is in pretty good condition. If you have a lot of slop in yours, I doubt it will work. There was a thread awhile back that described a method for calculating the spot for drilling a new hole in the shifter linkage to give the shifter lever more throw. The disadvantage of this is that the neutral-drive shift limiter will no longer be the right size, and park will not be the correct distance away from the neutral-drive shift limiter.

700R4s use 4spd columns,they are 4spds.I`m confused.Are you trying to use the original 3spd(TH350/TH400) auto column with a 700R4?

the way I hooked up my stock column to my 700r4 was to put the shifter into park with the linkage loose. Put the 700r4 in park. Install linkage into shifting arm on trans and tighten up adjusting bolt/ set screw. Indicater lines up in all gears but low 1. I can get a pic of set screw if needed.

PRND21 standard column in my truck w/700R4. D is overdrive, then there's a notch for 3rd, 2nd, and 1st, even though it doesn't match the D-2-1 on the indicator. Engages fully in each gear and works well. PO set it up so I don't know how he did it.

IIRC there is a removeable part inside the column. I think its called the "shift gate" & is held in with 2 screws. you will need to remove the bowl to access it. I think they (the OD gates) are still available from GM. get one for a mid - 80's (85ish)
can anyone back me up on this?
