305 carb woes

Hey guys,
I,ve been reading on this site for quite a while and you guys really put out some great info! This is my first post though so be gentle. I just bought an '84 Silverado with a 305, 4 bbl. The carb seems a little sluggish at times (cranking especially) and my mechanic tells he put a kit in it for the previous owner last fall. Any suggestions on a carb upgrade/replacement for this manifold? Thanks!

What do you mean sluggish especially on cranking?

It takes a while for it to fire? When it is running does it not perform well? Have you checked the choke on the carb? Is this a Rochester?

You come for answers and just get more questions!

Thanks Rockman,
It does pretty well once running but sometimes it's a bear to crank. I usually end up pumping the accellerator like crazy to get it to fire up. Not sure on the rochester part. I'll have to check. Pretty sure it's a spread bore.

my Blazer takes bout 6 pumps before starting its always been that way boutonce every few months I start it up and spray carb cleaner in it for several minutes also that seems to help keep it from gumming up and it seems to run better afterwards

Thanks for the welcome guys,
This is a rochester Quadrajet spreadbore carb. Seems like I remember Carter coming out with a spreadbore replacement a while back. Is this worth checking into or should I just go with a whole different manifold/carb combo? I'd like power and economy if possible. Thanks, Jim
