Yikes 5.13 ratio
I am looking at a 67 3/4T Customer Camper CST with 327/auto. Listed on the glove box is a 5.13 limited slip rear. I did not look at the automatic option on the glove box but it is a T-400(rebuilt because it is clean) with electric kickdown switch and not a cable like a T-350.
I have 2 questions: 1. Did GM use a T-400 in 67? 2. What about that 5.13 ratio? How bad will my RPMs be with an auto and a 5.13? I think this is original because the original owner ordered this to haul a camper and it is now for sale by his brother. All the 67 deluxe knobs are there along with a manual choke, 67 lighter, 67 am radio, chrome wing windows, glove box light and CST horn cap. Also shown on the glove box was the RPO A10 - Panoramic Cab. The dash has not been cut nor have the doors. The bed is a wood floor(rotted away) front sheet metal is very good along with the doors. I did notice a rust hole thru the floor down by drivers feet. Any idea on value with out pictures? Thanks - Bob

The TH400 was the ONLY 3 speed auto in 67, the TH350 didn't come into play untill 69.
The 5.13's will suck. No way around it. If it is an Eaton/corperate rear, then a gear chainge will be simple, and a 4.10 should be pretty easy to locate. THe panoramic cab option is a big back window. Value???? 50 bucks on up to $3500. |

Thanks for the info on the T-400 availability. I know without pics the value is hard to determine but I was hoping to get a small range than $3450.
Seriously guys - Thanks - Bob

I have the 5.13's in my '67 C-30 and the valves float out about 62 MPH...MAY get 65 Downhill with a tail wind!! The upside is if you ever need to move your house over a few feet, I'm sure it would do it!!

OTOH, if you plan on using fairly tall tires, the 5.13 ratio can make a SBC a stump puller and the truck a great tow vehicle, but no freeway competitor. If it has an Eaton rear axle, I'd guess that the limited slip is a detroit locker.
Both an Eaton Detroit Locker and Eaton 5.13 gear carriers are of value to the 4x4 Eaton users that want low gears for huge tires. I'd guess that you could sell the Eaton 3rd with Detroit for over $400. Eaton Detroit only for ~300. Eaton 5.13 3rd with open diff (from another Eaton 3rd while you kept the Detroit) ~200. You could keep the Detroit and swap it into another Eaton 3rd, say with 4.11 gears. Source an Eaton open diff carrier cheap and sell the 5.13 gears assembled with the open diff for a profit. I've heard many folks have sourced used, complete Eaton 4.11 3rds with open diffs for <$100. Sometimes $50. Or just swap in a complete Eaton w/higher gears & open diff and sell the Eaton Detroit 5.13 3rd complete. Options, options.

Hello all-new here. I own a 67 lwb custom camper. 3/4 ton ? Eaton 3rd member---
glove box sticker does not mention anything about gear ratio. I have stock size 16" tires 8 lug rims. She revs around 3000rpm at 60 mph= 4:11 gearing ? Who has ring and pinion gears for this axel-- 10 bolt cover with drop out carrier-- is there a model number for this axel. Thanks |

pacemaster, it's refered to by it's RPO number H052 (3/4ton) or H072 for the 1 tons. Ring/pinions only available used, 4.11, 4.57 and 5.13.

I would guess the value is more in the $1,000-1,500 range. If there is a rust hole through the floor, there will be a lot more very soon. The rotted bed, gears and 3/4 ton don't help the value either. Usually, the owners of these trucks think they have a gold mine on their hands. It usually becomes a matter of finding a sucker.
On the gears, with 30" tires, you will be turning about 3,500 rpm at 60. Sounds like Pacemaker has 4.57, I would look for 4.10, which is about the best you can find for an Eaton for a pre-73. You could also swap for a full-floater 14 bolt with 3.73.

Fred since when did you become the "Resident Curmudgeon"? Guess there's room for 2, Lord knows this board needs a kick in the a$$ from time to time.
FYI, the fact that it's a 3/4 ton with 5:13 gears is the reason to buy it. It's GVW and towing capacity that give a real truck value, poser's be damned

I'd buy it and leave the 5.13's in it, just throw some 33s or 35s on the rear to help with RPMs.

Again - THANKS to all you guys. This a great place for the exchange of ideas , thoughts and opinions. I truly value everybodies post.
The owner is asking $1200 - says to me only $1000(barely knows me). I, of course, want to pay less. Guess it is time to fish or cut bait. Any other ideas, keep 'em coming. Thanks again - Bob

I have a open 4.10 HO52 minus hubs sitting in my yard. It might need a overhaul, but I'll sell it for $50. I'm sure that somebody would love that rear for a dumptruck. Offer up 900 and see if he bites.

The model number should be stamped in the axle tube on the right? side, either on top or on the bottom, not sure though.

pacemaster, you guessed right on the money, 4.10 gears is what you should have if original. Small block with automatic automaticly got that onless otherwise optioned.

I forgot to mention it has a performance cam too. Great web site. Ps -driving at 5000' elevation. |
